Siobhán Rea is a Dublin based artist and teacher. Her work spans the disciplines of painting, multi-media and collaborative practice. Recent projects include collaborations with fellow postgraduate students at FIELD, NCAD to explore creative engagement with ecology, particularly feral ecologies in the inner city. Saileachainin, a collaboration with past pupils and exhibited at Polyphony, Dublin Artist Book Fair, continued in this vein and will continue through Saileachainin 2. Inter-generational projects also include one with The Company Of Trees in Clonakilty.
Her personal practice is concerned with our need to construct rituals in our confusing everyday. On 13.10.97 she commenced a daily ritual, entitled 0830ritual, in which she makes a 10cm square drawing of some aspect of her environment at 08:30, using whatever materials are to hand. Each drawing is dated and addressed, catalogued and, since 2022, uploaded to Instagram #0830ritual. The ritual is ongoing.
Rituals is a collaboration with Danielle McLaughlin on a project originating with the 90 days of 0830ritual made in January, February and March 2023. Using these drawings Danielle composed text. In her response to this, Siobhan incorporated embroidery, painting, drawing and performance. One outcome, Lichen, is a large drawn metaphor for two separate and self-sufficient entities merging to create another, entirely distinct entity. This collaboration is also ongoing.
