Thomas McCarthy is an Irish Traveller, singer and storyteller. Originally from Birr, County Offaly, he moved to London with his family aged 10, but continued to regularly visit his Irish family in the summer. Every year his grandfather who would bring him travelling the west coast of Ireland in a barrel top wagon.
Thomas has been described as a “fire-side storyteller”, with a store of tales about fairies, banshees, druids and Cúchulain that he learned from his family, passed down through the generations. He sees stories as part of the art of communication and keeping heritage and tradition alive. Thomas was awarded the TG4 2019 Gradam Ceoil Award of Traditional Singer of the Year.
